Hookah vs. Vape: What’s the Difference?

on

There are many different types of smoking devices on the market, so you are not alone if you wonder what the differences between them are.

As a better alternative to smoking, electronic cigarettes, also known as vaping, have gained popularity. E-cigarettes don't actually produce smoke, though; we'll get to that in a moment.

Hookahs are also well-liked, but for different factors, such as the smoking apparatus and the distinctive shisha tobacco variety.

What are the contrasts between the two, then? What are a hookah and vaping, respectively? They are they similar? Are there any other chemicals or nicotine in them both?

Here is a detailed look at the variations between hookah smoking and vaping.

Hookah

What Is Hookah?

With roots in Turkish, Egyptian, Persian, Indian, and other Middle Eastern cultures, hookah is a cultural practice. The British East India Company was responsible for the first significant global impact of hookah in the sixteenth century. Hookahs were exported from India and traded there, and high society noblemen started to use them.

The cultural value of hookah is conversation and connection. To enjoy the flavored smoke, one would gather with friends and family and pass the hose around. The legacy of hookah continues to emphasize this value of interaction and conversation.

Common hookahs are nothing more than water pipes. It has a head where you place the shisha, or moist tobacco, a hose and mouthpiece, and a stem attached to it.

When using it, you put moist tobacco in the head and heat it lightly with charcoal. The goal is to heat the shisha tobacco by holding the charcoal above the head without burning it. Then, smoke gets sucked through the water bowl and rises through the hose for hookah smoking.

Hookah smoke contains a different form of tobacco than you will find in other smoking options, including. However, tobacco means it can be addictive. Also called shisha, it contains molasses or honey, vegetable glycerine, flavoring, and nicotine in the tobaccos.

Vegetable glycerin, molasses, and the flavors of your choice combine to make it moist. It has a lower risk of combusting, making hookah smoke easy to breathe. Despite having less nicotine than most other smoking alternatives, it still contains nicotine.

Nowadays, hookah has changed from its traditional origins, primarily due to its global appeal and the expansion of flavor options. To create flavors for new palates and greater variety, innovators have discovered new ways to use chemicals. In addition to purchasing your own hookah, you can find hookah lounges all over the world. Despite its influence across countless nations and cultures, it continues to be a cultural expression.

Vape

What Is Vape?

Even though the e-cigarette may not have a long, storied past, e-cigarette has gained widespread acceptance in less than 20 years. The first e-cigarettes appeared in 2003, and they later developed into the vape pens we use today.

There are nicotine-containing cartridges for some of these devices, but nicotine-free cartridges are also available. The nicotine-containing ones have a high potential for addiction.

Vaping involves inhaling smoke created through a mechanical process. The e-cigarettes utilize an atomizer, power source, and a tank or cartridge. It creates vapor by heating a liquid in the tank or cartridge, which is how the e-cigarette got the name “vape.” The chemicals heat up to activate the rich flavor of your choice.

What is the Difference Between Vaping and Hookah?

So, how does hookah compare to vaping? The first and significant difference is that e-cigarettes have no tobacco, even though some cartridges have nicotine and some tobacco leaf. While hookah shisha is not ordinary tobacco, it is still tobacco. So, it retains the combustion of tobacco, which you will not find in a vaping device

Other differences involve burning coals with hookah smoking compared to the electric coils found in e-cigarettes.

The vessels used for smoking also vary. Hookahs are tall with a water bowl at the base and hose-like mouthpiece to inhale smoke. Vaping pens are small, pen-sized electronic devices with a small tip for inhalation.

Finally, a vaping device has the nickname “vape” for a reason. An e-cigarette produces a vapor – not smoke. Hookah does produce smoke.

What are the difference between electricity and coals?

The way that each method heats up to produce smoke is a notable difference.

To heat the shisha tobacco, a hookah burns charcoal. This charcoal is typically made from coconut shells, though common charcoal made from wood is also occasionally found.

In contrast to turning on an e-cigarette and turning on the heating coils, a hookah requires precise control over the charcoal burn. You don't want it to be too hot or the shisha tobacco will burn through quickly. The flames, however, could sputter if the light is too strong. For the best experience, you must balance the heat level.

Keep in mind that burning anything, including charcoal, produces carbon monoxide. You likely will not produce enough carbon monoxide in a hookah session to cause issues, but you want to be aware of it. It also means you should use hookah in a well-ventilated area so the carbon monoxide can leave and let in fresh air rotate.

Vape pens use atomizers to heat the e-liquid. These atomizers are battery-operated and involve a coil wrapped cotton. The e-liquid soaks into the cotton, heat gets applied, and the liquid turns to vapor, which the user then inhales.

Unlike hookah, there is no tricky heat adjustment. Vape pens often have auto-adjust heat settings measured in volts or watts. It prevents over- and under-heating.

Why are there cultural differences?

The length of time that both smoking types took to become well-known is another observable distinction. In 2003, the first electronic cigarette with a design was released. Its popularity recently skyrocketed and it is now widely used.

Much older, going all the way back to the sixteenth century, is the hookah. With the expansion of the glass exportation industry, the first hookahs were used in India. Through trade, it first gained popularity and eventually developed into the current cultural pastime.

Hookah and Vapes

Why are Hookah and Vaping Often Confused with Each Other?

Given these distinctions, it may not be obvious why people frequently mistake one for the other. There are some similarities that could account for the confusion. You will first experience smooth flavors with either one, so the taste outcomes may be similar. Vegetable glycerin and occasionally nicotine are among the chemicals they share. Although hookah is much more popular in the glass setup and connected tube design, both also offer pen options.

Vaping and hookah smoking both feel comfortable in the throat. Another area of potential confusion is the ease with which any nicotine- or tobacco-related smoking use can be grouped together. Other than that, you'll notice a difference in history, portability, and power source. An e-cigarette uses heated coils and e-liquid instead of tobacco to produce smoke. It may contain nicotine, but it's not necessary. Strong cultural roots are present in the flavorful shisha tobacco used in hookahs.

Which is better: Vaping or Hookah?

Which is preferable—vaping or hookah?—is the question that the majority of people want answered. It depends on your preferences, how frequently you want to use it, and what you hope to get out of a hookah or a vaping session.
